DUTIES:
The successful candidate will be responsible for the holistic nursing care of patients in the Operating Room. The OR nurse uses knowledge, judgment and skills based on the principles of physical, biological, physiological, behavioral, social and nursing science. The OR nurse performs circulating and scrub nurse duties in an interdisciplinary setting.

OR Procedures/Process

·

The Operating Room consists of 8 rooms for inpatient and outpatient surgeries. The following surgeries are performed: Cardiac-Thoracic, General, Cardiovascular, Orthopedics, P! lastic, Neurosurgery, Genitourinary, Gynecological, Eye, Dental, Podiatry, Bronchoscopy, Radiation Oncology and ENT.

Peri-operative nursing care is provided to surgical patients for scheduled and emergency procedures. Following surgery, patients are transferred to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), or the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Each operating room has a circulating nurse, which is always an RN, and a scrub nurse/technician. A RN, OR tech performs the scrub role. Some cases may require an additional person in the role of scrub or circulator depending on the complexity of the case.

Services Provided

·

The operating room is involved in the training of: surgical residents from Duke University; and nursing students from multiple locations. OR Tech students also affiliate intermittently for their operating room experience as well as CRNA students from Duke University.

Outpatie! nts processing the pre-op clinic for their pre-op assessment and teachi! ng. The peri-operative nurse identifies and documents nursing care needs on the pre-operative assessment form. The nursing intra-operative documentation is completed in the surgical package.

Cardiothoracic Surgery: Coronary Artery Bypass Graft and valve replacements

General Surgery: Hernia repairs; open and laparoscopic procedures, and colectomies

Cardiovascular: Carotid Endarterectomy and Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm Stent/repair

·

Genitourinary: Ureteroscopy with laser ablation of stones, Transurethral Resection of Bladder tumors, robotic surgery.

Orthopedic: Total Joint Replacements and arthroscopic surgeries (knee and shoulder)

TOUR OF DUTY

:

8 or 10 hour tours, Monday through Friday with rotating On Call responsibility

QUALIFICATIONS R! EQUIRED:
Qualifications Required:

Citizen of the United States. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency

and

accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia

. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years e! xperience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements ! for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.

Physical Requirements:
The position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring Veterans and objects may be required. Staff may be required to don protective equipment in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. RN is responsible for the reprocessing of reusabl! e medical equipment, according to the medical center policies. They are! required to used available safe patient handling lifting devices in all clinical areas. They may also be exposed to Veterans who are combative, secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.
