Responsibilities
Provide equipment and supply support for anesthesia personnel in all anesthetizing locations in the hospital. Ass! ist Anesthesia staff in assembly of equipment and supplies as ! needed. Make rounds to assigned rooms at the beginning of each shift providing CRNA with name and beeper number of Anesthesia Technician assigned to room. Maintain operational equipment on a daily basis. Ensure all equipment is charged and in working order. Setup anesthesia supplies for cardiac surgery cases and trauma/critical care cases. This includes machine calibrations, purging IV fluid drips, setting up infusor pumps, and monitoring equipment setup (EKG leads, pulse oximiter, blood pressure cuff and SVO2 if needed). The Anesthesia Technician will assure that hemodynamic pressure lines are set up, purged with appropriate IV fluids and calibrated. The Anesthesia Technician will assure that all IV lines and pumps are setup correctly. Troubleshoot anesthesia machines.
Replace soda lime and scavenging hoses as needed. Exchange ventilator bellows and housing for different case types. Assist in transporting and setting up Anesthesia machine/cart and supplies for off site! cases. Take broken equipment to Bio-Medical for repair. Maintain log book to track equipment out for repair. Stock anesthesia carts, special carts and shelves in each operating room (main OR, OR West, CV OR and L&D OR) with supplies and drugs according to established par levels. Check and maintain supplies in all specialty carts, including Emergency Airway Cart, Intubation Tackle Box and Malignant Hyperthermia Cart. This will be done each shift. Keep the Anesthesia department well stocked. This includes the prompt unpacking of all regular and special order supplies received. Retrieve additional supplies from stockroom as necessary. Replace anesthesia cart drug drawer trays from OR satellite pharmacy for replenishing carts. Inventory all special order supplies weekly. Complete online requisition forms for ordering special order items as needed when supplies are low. During the overnight (11pm-7am) shift, Anesthesia Technicians will fill all hotlines per Anesthesia Departmen! t policy. Check equipment, carts and shelves between cases. Remove all ! unnecessary equipment or supplies after each case. Restock the cart, anesthesia machine and shelves as needed. Wipe down anesthesia machines between cases. This includes the top and the back of the machines. Perform cleaning/sterilization process for laryngoscope blades and fiberoptic bronchoscope as needed in the Steris Sterilizer. This includes performing leak tests, biologic testing and pre-cleaning procedures specific to each type of bronchoscope. Attends all cases where Anesthesiologist utilize fiberoptic bronchoscopes so that careful handling and cleaning is maintained. Perform cleaning and storage of Transesophageal scopes according to unit policy. Terminally clean all anesthesia machines once a week. Keep Anesthesia department clean and tidy. General cleaning includes refrigerators. Perform and maintain logbook of daily Quality Control checks of Accu-Checks, refrigerator temperatures and mannitol warmers. During shift changes, report status of room readiness and equ! ipment cleaning to the incoming shift. Assist as needed in performing clerical duties in the Holding Area and PACU during first round cases. This includes addressographing packets, obtaining patient ID labels, answering the telephone, paging physicians, assisting patients to the restroom, transporting blood samples to the lab and being available to the Anesthesiologist and CRNAs for any extra assistance. Adhere to all hospital policies and regulations. Maintain a professional and safe work environment. Attend required staff meetings.
Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to provide and set up supplies and equipment appropriate to the age of the patient.
Minimum Requirements High School or equivalent In-service education on how to perform sterilization procedures with the Steris Sterilizer; in-service education training from Datex Ohmeda on trouble shooting anesthesia machines and calibrating End Tidal CO2 monitors. 3 months to 1 year experience required. On the job t! raining through an intensive 3 month orientation with an assigned resou! rce on each shift.
Preferred Requirements
Previous experience in the surgical environment preferred to have knowledge of sterile procedure in the Operating Rooms.
