Description
Position: Anesthesia Technician Location: UNC Rex Hospital
Hours: M-F 6a-230 p
The essential duties and responsibilities of an Anesthesia Technician include:
- Maintains an environment of safety for patients, self and others.
- Cross references specimen labels with requisition to ensure patient name and specimen name match. Transport specimens to the correct department in the lab.
- Maintains Operating Room Anesthesia supply carts and machines in a state of readiness including emergency rooms with specialized anesthesia set up. Verifies availability and readiness of all routine and Emergency Anesthesia Equipment, trays, and carts to include all carts and machines in remote locations. Restocks supply areas such blanket warmers, fluid warmers and ensure fluids are within date according to policy.
- Assists with equipment management: Ensures availability of surgical and anesthesia equipment as required for assigned cases; basic troubleshooting and routing for repair; assemble and disassemble bed frames and attachments according to manufacturerâs instructions. Maintains knowledge base of which frames and/or accessories can be used with the various surgical beds.
- Appropriately manages removal and return of medications in Pyxis system within Pharmacy guidelines.
- Initiates and follows room turnover as outlined in department guidelines to include: Cleaning Anesthesia Machine, overhead lights, and bed, operating room, equipment, and returns cleaned items to proper location. Ensures all equipment and supplies are readily available and set up according to next case specifications. Uses appropriate cleaning solution according to the level of disinfection required.
- Answers Department telephone, assisting callers with needs or routes calls to appropriate staff.
- Operates POCT equipment and retrieves appropriate medications based on results: Hemochron, Gem Premier, and Glucose meter.
- Positions patients safely under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse and/or Physician. Knows and practices safe positioning techniques according to case specific needs including prone positioning, holding limbs for prep, and safe holding techniques for regional anesthesia and all other possible positions. Utilizes proper body mechanics, additional staff when necessary and assistive devices in order to maintain safety for the patient and the Anesthesia Technician.
- Accompanies CRNA to pre-op holding to bring patient to operating room. Assists with transfer of patient to OR table, places all monitoring devices on patient and assists with induction. Anesthesia Technician will remain in room for positioning and prepping of patient. Anesthesia Technician will remain until no longer needed by Anesthesia provider or circulating nurse.
- Practices aseptic technique at all times to eliminate contamination while working in close proximity to sterile field.
- Retrieves blood products and demonstrates understanding of blood type of patient and donor. Appropriately packs cooler according to specifics blood products retrieved. Returns the cooler containing unused product within allotted time frame to prevent waste of products.
- Performs Anesthesia related tasks delegated to the Anesthesia Technician under the direct supervision of a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and/or Anesthesiologist. Assists with sterile trays for central line placement and may include assisting with Swan-Ganz catheter placement for open heart cases.
- Demonstrates knowledge and ability to assist the Anesthesia provider under all circumstances by understanding equipment and medications related to difficult airway management, airway emergency management, malignant hyperthermia management, anaphylaxis management and circulatory or respiratory arrest events.
Other duties may be assigned. Open Heart experience preferred.
Qualifications
Candidate must have a High School Diploma or GED AND a current Basic Cardiac Life Support Licensure (BCLS). Previous experience in health care with computer knowledge, and experience with college level anatomy, physiology and medical terminology is preferred.Primary Location
